Brokerage 1099s, imported instead of retyped

An Orange County CPA firm keyed 1099 Composite data into their tax software by hand every season. We automated it.

Sample data, replayed from the real workflow. It runs on its own; click inside it to take over.

Every 1099 Composite was typed in by hand

Brokerages send a single "1099 Composite" PDF that bundles several forms: interest, dividends, and every sale from the year. Each brokerage lays it out differently, and a busy client can have several of them.

The firm's tax software can't read those PDFs. So every season, staff opened each one, found the right boxes, and retyped the numbers into the return, then double-checked them against what was already there. It's slow, it's error-prone, and it lands at the busiest time of year.

the old routine, per form
  1. Find the 1099 in a client email and save the PDF
  2. Scroll to the 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and 1099-B sections
  3. Retype each box into the right screen of the return
  4. Check it against what's already on the return
  5. Repeat for the next brokerage, and the next client

What we built

A private Chrome extension that takes a 1099 from the client's email to an imported return, with a person approving every step that matters.

  1. Email intake

New 1099s are pulled from the firm's inbox automatically. Upload is there for anything that arrives another way.

  2. Field extraction with highlighting

Each official box is read and highlighted on the document, so staff see exactly where every number came from. PDFs are read in the browser, not uploaded.

  3. Review queue

Values the tool isn't sure about are flagged for a person to confirm or correct before anything moves on.

  4. Reconciliation before import

Before writing to the return, the tool checks it against what's already there and asks before it would overwrite anything.

Try it yourself

Open a document and walk it through: confirm the flagged value, settle the overwrite, and import. Everything here is sample data.

This is a front-end replica built for this page. The names, brokerages, amounts and tax IDs are invented, and nothing you do here touches a real return. Open the demo on its own page.
